Stardew Valley

Gahhh I hate timers counting down. It’s so stressful that I only have 10 real-time minutes to take care of everything that must be done that day! How do I find enough food? Can I die? Why is my energy level so continuously low? Is someone in this town trying to kill me?? It occurs to me after a frantic half hour of play that my experience has been dramatically colored by the previous several nights of FPS attempts, mixed with my old frustration at not knowing what the hell I’m supposed to do. Every game a world, every game pushing the conventions of genres perhaps well-defined to someone but certainly not to me. Is this a Minecraft-inflected harvesting game? It’s got the top-down, open-world-ish, rural 8-bit look of an early Zelda game (Link to the Past maybe?) Is it a Farmville without the social media? Is there some kind of mystery associated with the dead relative? Why does it give me so much choice about my character’s look when, honestly, this is the least RPG game ever. Resource-management games with so many choices make me anxious, because yeah, like I needed another set of incomprehensible systems I must master. Also, this is hilarious, because Stardew Valley is not at all complicated, it’s a pretty chill farming simulator. I will probably survive.
